The Gibson Desert is a very special place.  It's remote, it's vast and it is one of the last wilderness areas in Australia.

Nature is unpredictable that is why we keep our itinerary as flexible as possible.

The below itinerary serves as a 'mud map' and not as a detailed 'road map'.

DAY 1

Meet in Kalgoorlie. Pick up from Train Station if required. Stay in Motel for a Greet-and-Meet-Evening. This is the only evening dinner is not provided but at the expense of the guest.

DAY 2 & 3

Camping on the way to Carnegie Station. The route may vary due weather conditions but we prefer to stick predominantly to unsealed back roads.

DAY 4

Depending on arrival time, we either stay at Carnegie Station or will pass through it and camp our first night along the Gunbarrel Highway.

DAY 5 & 6 (possibly one more day)

Drive to Mungkili Claypan Nature Reserve which we will explore on foot the next day.

DAY 7

We visit the Geraldton Geography Society Bore with the opportunity to fill up water and do some (minor) washing. Our next camp will be in an area were Bilbies occur and even though the chances are very small to spot one, we might at least discover their tracks, scats and feeding places.

DAY 8 & 9 (possibly one more day)

We stop at Fairy Circle Hill for a 360 degree view and some fairy circle discussion. Then we leave the Gunbarrel Highway and turn onto the Gary Highway. We camp at a rocky outcrop called Charlies Knob. He outcrop is part of the Young Range which we explore the next day on foot.

DAY 10

The next highlight is east off the Gary Highway and called McPherson Pillar. We  camp along the side track leading to the Pillar.

DAY 11 & 12 (possibly one more day)

We continue all the way to the Pillar and visit Mulgan Rockhole on the way. The next day we hike to the various Pillars.

DAY 13 & 14 (possibly one more day)

Depending on whether Lake Cohen (north of the turn-off to McPherson Pillar ) is dry or full of water we include either a short day visit or stay one or two nights there. If we don't stay overnight we use the allocated days for extra nights at other places.

DAY 15

We return to Charlies Knob and either camp there or just north of it in the open acacia bushland.

DAY 16

Camp at Mungkili Claypan Nature Reserve or somewhere near by to break up the journey to Carnegie Homestead.

17 DAY

We stay at Carnegie Homestead.

18 & 19 DAY

Return journey to Perth, possibly via Lake Deborah (depending on time and road conditions).

20 DAY

Arriving in Perth

Below our approximate route highlighted in blue on a google map.

We travel about 3000 km in total from Kalgoorlie to Perth.
