Join us on a Hiking Tour (approx. 8 km return) along the shores of Big Lagoon.  

Big Lagoon lies within Francois Peron National Park and is famous for its turquoise waters flanked by red sand and green acacia bushland. Access by car is restricted to the lower part of the Lagoon which is why only a day hike can take you where the Lagoon is at its best.

Morning tea and afternoon tea are provided but its BYO and CYO (= carry your own) lunch and water.

This is a bushwalk which leads over uneven and unmodified terrain, hence a high level of fitness is required to join this tour.

We meet at a place near Denham and first wander through the bush to spot some of the amazing night creatures. As mammal diversity is poor in Shark Bay and as population numbers are low, we focus on reptiles and the intriguing world of invertebrates. 

Although Australia is most famous for its cuddly mammals and iconic birds such as the emu, it’s the invertebrates that impress with the greatest diversity and the oddest traits and body features.  

Did you know that there are more cockroach species than mammal species in Australia? More spider species than bird species? And more beetle species than all Australian plant species together?

After our bush walk we settle down with a hot drink to enjoy some stargazing and story telling. Learn about the dark emu in the sky and why the constellation Scorpius and Orion are placed on the opposite ends of the night sky. Check out what's in the jewel box and in the coalsack...

To avoid disappointment, please note that Shark Bay is in draught condition and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Please also note that we do not use telescope for stargazing but high quality binoculars.

Location, start time and duration of the Night Explorer depend on the prevailing condition on the respective night (e.g . season, wind condition, where is the best place for wildlife and how long you can keep awake ... ;-)...).

At the moment this tour is only offered in combination with booking a tour into Francois Peron National Park.

This amazing adventure takes you to a not often visited peninsula deep within the World Heritage Area. After a full day of exploring settle down at the foot of some magnificent sand dunes and enjoy the here and now watching the sunset and having dinner under billions of stars.

If you are into astrophotography, this is the place to be. Alternatively, enjoy a night walk to look for some nocturnal creatures or just sit back and relax and count shooting stars.
