Gibson Desert Explorer

Gunbarrel Highway & Gary Highway

Join us on truly unique desert tour which will take you to one of the most remote and least travelled areas in WA. On our way we will touch the Little Sandy Desert and the Great Victoria Desert but our main destination is the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve.

Encompassing almost 19.000 km², the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve, protects a great proportion of the Gibson Desert. The reserve is mostly inaccessible except for the western side which can be accessed via the Gary Highway and some side track.

This tour is designed for true desert lovers. If you are looking for a trip that takes you to spectacular natural monuments such as mountains, gorges or breakaway, then this tour is NOT for you. However, if you are keen to let your explorer instinct roam free, appreciate camping under a sky lit up by millions of stars and if you enjoy the deafening quietness of the desert, then this tour won’t disappoint you.

While travelling along iconic tracks such as the Gunbarrel Highway and the Gary Highway you will be embraced by endless spinifex plains, rewarded by spectacular 360 degree views to the horizon and accompanied by the special feeling of remoteness and being one with nature. We don’t set out to conquer the desert in a rush but to let the desert seduce us in its own slow pace. We go slow, stop frequently and stay in most places two nights – even though there might be ‘nothing’ to see at first sight.

If you would like to join this unique desert adventure, please read the requirements below as they will not only tell you what you need to bring but they will also reveal the special nature of this tour.

You need to be a true desert lover.

Australia's deserts are special in that they are not bare but green with vegetation. In the case of the Gibson Desert the vegetation is dominated by vast spinifex plains with pockets of acacia shrubland. There are only a few natural features which stand out such as a claypan, a small hill and a low range. Do not expect massive natural monuments such as gorges or mountains. The beauty of the arid zone is more subtle but no less impressive …. and, as every true desert lover knows, the desert has many faces – depending on rainfall – the desert could be in full bloom or it could be ‘just’ dry and, well, very desert like…. Which will go for most years, so you must be able to see the beauty of both faces.

You need to be fit.

This is not a sit-in-the-car-sight-seeing-tour. We get out of the car and go exploring. Because there are no established walking trails in the Gibson Desert, we do walk cross-country. Therefore you need to be able to walk over unmodified, sometimes sandy, sometimes stony terrain and you need to be prepared to brush past prickly spinifex and bush bash through acacia shrubs.

Most days we walk up to 5 km but twice or three times we walk for up to 10 km. You need to be able to join .... staying behind is NOT an option.

You need to be happy in the dark.

We do not illuminate our camp more than necessary. We don’t use floodlights but rely on our headlamps and, occasionally, set up some small lights around the camp for orientation. Most but not all night we will have a campfire.

You need to be happy to loose contact with the rest of the world (including your grandchildren).

We will be travelling through one of the most isolated places in Australia. One of the beauties of this area is that there is no reception. Therefore you will be unable to hear how the grandchildren are doing, you won’t be able to keep up with footy scores or any new foolishness coming out of the USA. And yes, there is star link, but we don’t provide it and we prefer our guests not having one as it would spoil the spirit of the tour.

You need to be healthy.

We will spent most of the time in remote areas where medical help can be days away (even the RFDS cannot land everywhere). If you have ANY medical issues that might require urgent attention, then this tour is not suitable for you.

You need to be 'bush-proof'.

You must be bush toilet trained and happy with basic shower/wash facilities. Although we carry a simple bush toilet/seat (thunderbox), we won’t put it up every day/night, so you need to be able to squat.

Water is precious in the desert and our water carrying capacity is limited. Therefore daily washing/shower water is restricted to 1.5l per person – more than sufficient as we will introduce you to our low tech shower system.

Please also let us know whether you have a special interest, e.g. painting, bird watching etc. so that we can accommodate your passion.
